Wine tasting in Hermanus, Björn’s travel tip

Our wine tasting in Hermanus, one of our nice weekend trips in South Africa, started a Friday morning in Cape Town just after the sun rise. We went up early that day to get the most out of the day. Hermanus and Hemel-en-Aarde Valley offer a lot of beautiful wine farms with excellent wines. The valley has got many prizes for their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from all over the world.

It was December and the weather was very nice, warm and sunny. It is so good to escape the cold winter in Sweden and get some warm weather in sunny South Africa. A perfect winter holiday to get some vitamin D. As all Swedes need during the dark winter.

After we had packed the car we set off for wine tasting in Hermanus. It was an easy drive only about 2 hours. We took the beautiful road past Betty’s Bay to look at the penguins.

First wine tasting in Hermanus with pairing

Our first stop in Hermanus for some wine tasting was at the wine farm Creation. We had booked a wine pairing. It was amazing. Something I recommend everyone to do if you are in Hermanus. You need to book long in advance. It is something very special!

Wine tasting in an old church

Down the road from wine farm Creation is Ataraxia. The wine tasting is in a wonderful building with beautiful scenery around. We did a quick stop here to try some of their best wines.

Check-in and dinner in Hermanus

We checked in at Misty Waves Boutique Hotel. A small hotel with a lot of personalities. Just a short walk from Hermanus centre. We really enjoy staying there. We had a splendid dinner at the restaurant La Pentola. Good food with a beautiful view over the ocean. The restaurant is right on the coastline.

Day two of wine tasting in Hermanus

We started Saturday morning with a beautiful walk along the beach. It ended up with us kayaking on the Sea. Unfortunately, the wrong season to see whales. Hermanus is very famous for their whales that come every year. We had booked lunch at Newton Johnson. On the way up there we stop at wine estate Hamilton Russel to do a wine tasting. The wine tasting was in a small farmhouse right next to a small dam. Beautiful scenery and wines.

Amazing lunch and wine tasting at Newton Johnson

Spectacular views of mountains and vineyards from their wine tasting room and restaurant. We had a 5-course meal. Every dish was beautifully presented. Their food was something else and together with their wines, an experience not to be forgotten.

Sushi over Hermanus harbour

Hermanus had so many more wine farms to offer. Our wine tastings had been so good so we decided to go back to the hotel. We enjoy some time in Hermanus centre that night. We had beautiful sushi at The Harbour Rock restaurant. A restaurant just above the Harbor in Hermanus.

After a good night sleep, we drove back to Cape Town. This time we took the shorter drive over the mountain pass.

Hermanus has a lot to offer if you are a wine lover. We really enjoyed our wine tasting weekend in Hermanus.
